Pages 40-41, “The Strategic Mindset”

Is it ever wise to place your future in the hands of anonymous strangers who have neither allegiance, nor ties to you and your family?

Consider employer sponsored 401k plans. The vampires on Wall St. and the financial media they control have designed a brilliant system from their perspective. It’s a system that maximizes their returns, minimizes their risks, and virtually ensures that a perpetual stream of your money flows into their coffers like clockwork – and all with the backing of the government!

They strictly control what they allow you to invest in and there are even fines and penalties if you try to use your money before they say you can. It’s a government sanctioned, government enforced, corporate HR department fueled and marketed subscription service that funnels your money into Wall Street’s accounts. Wow!

Great work when you can find it. Bet you wish they’d let you run your business that way. And what exactly do you get for your subscription? You get promises. You get the hope of getting something back in a few decades when they allow you to begin drawing it down.

You don’t have an actual claim to anything physical. You don’t in fact have ownership of anything. What you have is an account. An account controlled by anonymous strangers who don’t know you, don’t care about you, and have nothing on the line if things go wrong. An account backed by pieces of paper issued by companies that may have vastly different agendas than your own, and that may or may not be there when you retire.

Sounds like a lousy subscription service to me. At least with Netflix, you get to watch movies. In my opinion, what you have is a gamble, a gamble only marginally better than a convenience store lotto ticket.

Let that sink in. Let that sink in really deep.
